It’s worrying just about everybody. The writing skills of today’s students, that is. Blame it on the death of letter writing and thank you notes; blame it on emailing and instant messaging; blame it on lack of practice and caring. Whatever you come up with, we’ve got a problem. Does putting thought to paper come easily to your child, or does it invite arm twisting, gnawed pencils, and piles of crumpled paper? And does it matter? You bet. Says Pennsylvania’s Department of Education, “Writing is an essential skill in most places, where it serves as a means of posing and solving problems, of making reports, and of persuading others to take a particular action.” There’s no getting around it. This is, after all, the Information Age. First step: bring it home. Don’t just think of writing and the honing of skills as the work of schools and teachers. Keep it close, keep it meaningful, keep it going-and get in the act, too. There’s writing to be done: 1. Message each other
frequently by leaving notes on pillows, desks, mirrors, wherever. 2. Make letter writing a habit for all, sending them to friends, relatives, even Santa. 3. Write your autobiography as a gift to your child. 4. Have your child write an annual “Year in Review”–an ongoing record of your lives. 5. On birthdays, give written gifts of family stories and recalled moments. 6. Send postcards to each other-without going anywhere. We all love mail. 7. Make the sending of thank you notes a must for everyone. 8. Keep a family journal, a record of your lives over time-and include captioned photos. 9. Writing letters to the editor keeps the juices flowing. 10. Promote journal writing-and respect privacy. 11. Encourage your child to write and perform skits or puppet shows. Think Popsicle sticks. With all that at-home writing going on-reading, too–skills improve. They have no choice. Meanwhile, back at school, essays and essay tests keep coming, so, to keep up the momentum, share these suggestions with your child: 1. Carry a “writer’s notebook” for capturing interesting observations, bits of noteworthy conversations, cool facts, great quotes, etc.–a gold mine for future writings. Here’s a favorite from mine:
“If life had a sneak preview, would you attend? Would you want to know everything in store?” ~ from a First Health print ad
2. A thesaurus, dictionary, and How to Spell It (for not-sure-how-to-spell words) are a must. So is maintaining a personal dictionary of troublesome words. 3. A word wall of newly encountered words, along with their definitions and parts of speech, builds vocabulary and language skills. 4. Travel logs for recording new sights and experiences bring the journey home and serve as a resource for future assignments. 5. A pad and pencil placed on the bedside table-flashlight, too-is the way to go for recording while-sleeping ideas. 6. “Free writing” for five minutes about a favorite person, place, thing, idea, or event; then switching to something distasteful serves as a super warm-up. 7. “Brainstorm” the topic first by creating a list of associated words and phrase, thus setting the stage for the first draft.

Scrapbooks are the perfect place for preserving your timeless memories. They can document your family history and preserve the joy of celebrations and gatherings. They can include your descriptions of events and people, adding to the personal nature of a scrapbook. And they can last a lifetime or two if you use the proper materials.
Parents use scrapbooks to record their children’s early years by collecting photos, report cards, artwork, letters, articles, and announcements that tell the child’s story. They assemble precious treasures in one place, eliminating the need for chaotic shoe boxes full of memorabilia mixed with junk. If you have some time, why not make scrapbooking a family project. It will give you hours of conversation talking about events that your photos and memories recall. It will fine-tune everyone’s creativity and imagination. It will bring you closer together in a world where busy schedules often drive you apart.
Ideas for Your First Scrapbooking Project
If you want to create a scrapbook around your child’s keepsakes, here are the steps you’ll want to follow:
1. Go through your keepsakes to select the special ones you want to keep forever. Toss what you don’t want to keep, and mount your treasures on textured paper, a thin mat, or heavy-weight fabric.
2. Get some paper clips, ribbons, tassels, buttons, dried flowers, and other small objects to use to embellish your pages. 3. Attach a note to each keepsake that describes it. What event does it represent? Who gave it to them? How was it used? As your children to add their own notes about it.
4. Make a title for the scrapbook using your own handmade cut-out letters or find stencils or stick-on letters. Use it for the cover of the scrapbook and for special pages you want to highlight. 5. Now, order your photos and memorabilia the way you want to present it in your scrapbook. You may want to keep things in chronological order, or you may want to group them according to some other theme like your child’s favorite subjects or talents. 6. After you know what order you want things in, decide on how you want to lay them out. Page by page, just place them without glue until you find the perfect arrangement. To make it more fun for the whole family, let people try different things and then vote on the “best” arrangement.
7. Now, glue the items onto your pages. Let them sit for a while to ensure the glue dries properly, and then assemble them in your album. Your finished product is a wonderful story-telling scrapbook that tells your children how important they really are to you. It’s a treasure of memories you’ll want to revisit time and time again. When your child goes to college or gets married, it will be a precious special gift of love.
After you have some experience with scrapbooking, you’ll want to move on to more sophisticated methods. You can use a wide variety of items to decorate and add interest to your pages. Your theme, color scheme, design, layout, and embellishments will tie your memorabilia together in a beautiful elegant format. Creating a More Sophisticated Scrapbook
When you’re ready to move on to your next project, here are some things you’ll need to remember to create a sophisticated, elegant scrapbook:
1. Choose materials that reflect a classic color scheme. Your color scheme can reflect a theme (like red, white, and blue for patriots; beige, sand, turquoise, and salmon for that Santa Fe look; or different shades of blue for the sky or ocean). The combinations are limited only by your imagination. Be sure that the entire scrapbook maintains your color scheme, including your embellishments like buttons, die-cuts, and stick-ons.
2. Layer your papers and fabrics to add interest and impact and to create a fluid, interactive effect. 3. Use straight classic lines to create a balanced, organized effect. Or use curves and classic shapes to soften your pages. Whichever you choose, be consistent. Don’t use straight lines on one page and curves on the next.
4. Be sure your colors blend well with the photos and memorabilia to maintain a unified look and feel.
5. Don’t overload your pages with bulky embellishments. Keep as shallow a dimension as you can without letting your scrapbook become boring. You can use charms, thin foam, lace, ribbons, alphabet tiles, and tassels to add dimension. But don’t overdo it. You don’t want to detract from the main pieces – your photos and memorabilia.
6. If your photos already have a common theme or design, be sure that your scrapbook reflects the same theme. Your added touches should complement your memories, not distract viewers from them.
Making Tassels to Brighten Up your Scrapbook
Tassels are favorite scrapbooking embellishments. Used often by those with the artistic touch, they include embroidery thread, yarns, loose threads, straw, cords, or raffia. They’re great for scrapbooking, and they’re perfect for other projects like scarves, bookmarks, knitting, pillows, afghans, and draperies. You can find tassels at home craft or fabric stores, but you can make them yourself to assure they’re unique. To make your own tassels, follow these simple steps:
1. Get a piece of cardboard cut to the size you want for your tassel.
2. Wrap your tassel material (thread, yarn, etc.) around the cardboard many times. Make it as thick or as thin as you want your finished tassel to be. Use materials consistent with your color theme. You can mix colors or use only one.
3. Use a long piece of yarn (or ribbon or thread) around the cardboard, about an inch from one end of the cardboard, and tie it off loosely.
4. Gently remove the cardboard and draw the long tie off up to make a tight knot. Now, wrap more of your material around the knotted tie-off to give it strength and texture.
5. Use a thread to tie off the 1″ end of the tassel and attach to an anchor or hook. 6. Clip the folded long end of the tassel to create loose threads, and trim the ends to give a clean, even look.
You have created your own tassel. For using in y our scrapbook, you’ll want your tassel to be thinner, enough to create dimension without being bulky. For other projects, the thickness is up to you! We’ve outlined the basic steps to creating a basic scrapbook and to bring it up a notch. We’ve shown you how to create your own tassels. Keep in mind that these are basic steps and suggestions, not hard-and-fast rules. Scrapbooking is an individual art, an expression of your personality. If you want to bend or even break these rules, feel free! The point is creating an object of beauty that expresses your personal uniqueness and that presents your memories in a well-coordinated beautiful package.

It became official when Commissions Bud Selig wrote a letter to Lew Wolff, owner of the Oakland Athletics, advising that if the deal with Fremont, California to build a new ballpark there falls through, he can talk with other areas about building. This opens up some opportunities for the club to have talks with other communities, including Santa Clara County, which is considered within San Francisco Giants’ land. In the past, the Giants have blocked the possibility of a move into that area by the Oakland A’s. Wolff believes a door that was previously closed is now open to them but hasn’t lost sight of Fremont. “The other communities are all over us now because of the letter but I’m not listening to them yet. I don’t want to start this process all over again,” Wolff said. Unfortunately, there’s no speeding train running from Freemont. Wolff believe he’ll know by June if CISCO Field will be built in Fremont or elsewhere. Apparently not everyone in Fremont want
s the new ballpark in their back yard. Even though the ballpark is being nearly entirely funded by private means, the Fremont City Council has yet to approve the deal. Over two years ago, CISCO and the Oakland A’s made an agreement to purchase the Fremont property and build a new ballpark. The promise to purchase hasn’t been enough to get the necessary approval however and Wolff’s feeling the frustration. “We’re literally going to homes talking to people,” Wolff said, “They think we’re going to bring gangs to the community.” The Oakland A’s have shared a facility with the football team almost all of the franchise’s history except for 1982 to 1994. They’ve been sharing the Coliseum since their relocation from Kansas in 1968. Although talks did commence with Oakland officials about building on the Coliseum parking lot, the talks didn’t amount to anything and were ended. Because talks have not come to fruition with Fremont, Selig believes it was import
ant to give Wolff a plan B. “It is important that we get some resol
ution in the near future,” Selig wrote in the December 8 letter to Wolff. “As a result, I’ve decided…you may begin to discuss a ballpark with other communities…” Fremont, California is right in line behind San Jose, Oakland and San Francisco as the fourth most densely populated communities in the San Francisco Bay Area. Wolff believe that building the new ballpark in Fremont would easily create hundreds of union jobs in a city with a population of approximately 211,660 people. Wolff, who was part of a group that purchased the Oakland A’s in 2005, is also a fraternity brother of Selig. Both went to University of Wisconsin. In 2006, Wolff made the announcement that he wanted to build the franchise their own ballpark. The hope has continued to be that he will be able to build in Fremont but, according to Selig, Wolff can keep his options open, which means he can consider Santa Clara County as well.

As the world of internet is growing so is the importance of online advertising. Advertising professionals and content publishers are always on the prowl to develop something unique and creative for their clients’ business. Due to this trend the prominence of RSS feed subscriptions have increased and is being considered as one of the most successful way of ad-models that is used for online marketing purpose. RSS feed advertisements and RSS subscription are two features that can maximize the profits out of RSS feeds. RSS subscription feeds are created in order to sell good and original quality of content. Like, a publisher who wishes to market its content would put up a teaser copy into the RSS feed for advertising in browsers. In case the visitor wants to buy the whole content, it can be done by paying for a subscription. However the success of RSS feeds is highly dependent on the presentation of the content done by it. The projection should show the content as unique and o
f higher value. Put the content that is original and unique, as a customer would not spend money for content which he can get from any free source. If you want the subscription model to be effective, you would need to keep the content value-based and unique. During last few years many advertising models and techniques have become popular in the market. Earlier text ads and banner ads used to be the most preferred tools, but now they are not so popular. As text ads are not so attractive and banner ads are being filtered by the users, the importance of RSS feeds have increased for better ads’ success and are being used by more number of online advertisers. If we see the present online ads scenario, contextual advertisements and ads related to the content of RSS feed are popular. A RSS feed should be highly attractive for the readers, therefore you need to update it regularly and users should have easy access to it. Try to promote the feed by effective techniques for bett
er online results. They can be also forwarded to the customers via e
-mails, most easy method to establish connection with prospective customers. Also it can be made appealing by placing it in your website. Greater number of visitors means more number of RSS. This feed can also be used as a PR tool for forwarding sales letters, press releases and articles. There are many more ways to use RSS feed for greater success ratio. Consult an expert marketing consultant having its knowledge for choosing the best way out to use it for your website.

If you ask people what their favorite holiday many will exclaim, Christmas! When asked why, some will mention Santa Claus and getting gifts, but most will list things like festive parties, Christmas carols, and twinkling light displays as reasons for their love of the holiday.

The pleasant memories invoked by annual activities like these help to form cherished Christmas traditions that get passed down through families for generations. This is certainly true for my family and at the first hints of autumn we start to feel excitement for the coming holiday season! Here are five holiday traditions you and your family can use to begin creating Christmas memories.Christmas Movies

My family’s Christmas traditions begin on Thanksgiving Day by watching the 1947 black & white version of Miracle on 34th Street. Over the years, we have collected more than 30 Christmas themed DVDs and videos. So, it has become an anticipated tradition for us to gather together to sip hot cocoa and eat Christmas cookies while we watch one of those movies every night throughout the month of December.Holiday Baking

At our house everyone looks forward to the first week of Christmas vacation, when we go into baking mode and spend 3-4 days baking our favorite Christmas cookies! Everyone gets together at someones house and each person bakes their favorite holiday treats. During this time we take time to remember Christmas past.

When we are all done we divide up the goodies and take them home to enjoy or hand out as gifts.Christmas Trees

This Christmas tradition can be a point of contention as there are many strong and varied opinions on this topic.

Many families put up their Christmas tree the weekend before Thanksgiving or earlier while a few will wait until Christmas Eve. Some choose the one-time purchase, pine needle-free convenience of a life-like artificial tree, but for others only a fragrant, fresh-cut live tree will do.

But, whether you choose a real tree or not; choose a theme that the family will have fun with for years.Christmas Stockings

Another cherished tradition is the hanging of stockings on Christmas Eve for Santa to fill with goodies!

Christmas stockings come in many sizes and styles, from sophisticated store-bought ones to homemade hand-crafted ones. The type of stockings you choose to hang may vary from year to year or you may choose to use the same stockings every Christmas.

But whatever you decide to do be sure to have lots of fun things and tasty treats to fill them.Santa Letters

At Christmas time it is traditional for children to write letters to Santa Claus telling him how good they’ve been all year and requesting specific toys from him as a reward for their good behavior.

A new twist on this old tradition is to have Santa write letters to the kids. It’s an excellent way to encourage youngsters to continue good behavior and to keep the mystique of Santa alive.

If you don’t feel that you can write a letter from Santa to your kids go to LettersFromSanta Darrell Causey is a teacher, coach and father of seven who enjoys many traditions.
